A Brief Biography of Samuel Barclay Beckett Essays
Samuel Barclay Beckett was an Irish avant-garde novelist (a person who introduces new and experimental ideas and methods in art, music, or literature.), playwright, theatre director, and poet. Best known for his play GoDot he is sometimes considered the last of the Modernists as well as the father of the Postmodernist movement due to the influence his work had on many writers. Samuel Beckett was born on Good Friday, April 13, 1906, near Dublin, Ireland. He was the younger of the two sons born to William Frank Beckett, a quantity surveyor, and May Barclay who was a nurse. He was raised in a middle class home with a protestant background and at the age of five he attended a local playschool. During the following years of his life, Beckett won first place for his poem ââ¬Å"Whoroscopeâ⬠winning à £10, and published his first and second novels; More pricks than Kicks and Murphy. He then travelled through Europe again. During his travels he visited Germany he documenting through many notebooks, the rise of the Nazi party and the disgust he felt towards the regime that was taking control of the country. He returned to Ireland in 1937 but had a major disagreement with his mother, the argument contributed massively to him leaving Ireland and settling permanently in Paris. Placing himself in the left bank of Paris, Beckett familiarised himself with many locals and artist and frequently conversed with old friend James Joyce. He also became hospitalized in 1938 after an incident where he was stabbed in the chest, coming very close to death in the street. He had been approached by a renowned pimp asking him for money. Suzanne Dà ©chevaux-Dumesnil, the women that would later become his wife, visited him whilst he was in hospital. Once recovered from hospital he visited the pimp that stabbed him and Beckett asked him what the motive behind the attack was.
